Choosing a Louver Size

Most shutters come available in standard 2.5", 3.5" or 4.5" louver widths.  So how do you decide which size is best for your home?  Generally, it becomes a choice considering the size and proportions of the louver related to the dimensions of your room.  Correct louver proportions can make a huge difference in how a room is used and enjoyed. If the louver is too small or too large, it can be like a person wearing a minuscule hat or supersize pair of shoes.

Here are some rules of thumb that we share when helping a customer make their louveer size choice.  How much volume does the room have?  Do you have 8 foot ceilings or 16 foot ceilings?  How big are the windows?  Large with big views or smaller with obstructed views.  How large is the trim in the and the baseboards?  The larger the baseboards the larger you can make your louvers.

While there is no set rule for choosing a louver size, considering these sorts of proportions will help you decide if the bigger louver will be a pleasant design choice, or if a smaller louver will hit that sweet spot.  For whatever it is worth, 80% of the homes we service choose the 3.5" louver, as it fits well with most of the homes you find in master planned communities.  However, don't be afraid to venture to the 2.5" or 4.5" option, as they can really work well - especially if you are considering your design preferences and proportions.

Beautiful Shutter Job in Tucson

2/16/2015

We recently completed a beautiful shutter job in Tucson Arizona and we thought you might enjoy seeing some of the pictures.  This particular job utilized a medium "z" frame in a light shade of white.  The customer opted for a split tilt option - meaning that they can open the top and leave the bottom closed or vice-versa.   Additionally, they decided to utilize a 3.5 inch louver to match the dimensions of their windows and rooms and then choose the hidden tilt feature - meaning no center tilt bar is present in the panels.

Our install team did a great job installing this job onto french door trim and into block with steel headers.  Despite all of this detail and extra install consideration, the job was executed flawlessly and the results were amazing.  Another happy customer - and a very satisfying experience for our team.

We would love to help you with your shutter project.  Also, if you are a budget conscience individual, then check out our online shutter cost calculator.

Industry Standards for Shutter Production

It is critical that buyers of custom shutters understand the industry standards for production and quality.  It is wise and prudent to have a meeting of the minds as it relates to what is possible in the production of your custom shutters - and ultimately leave no unpleasant surprises come installation time.

For instance, color variations generally occur from product samples to actual production runs. It is just a fact, that in any industry, colors change from one lot to another.  Notice the color variation in the shutter to the left.  This variation is inherent in wood products and is part of its appeal and charm.

Also, dye lot coloration and surface texture variations occur between material runs.  For example, when wood is painted a pure white, the color if affected by both temperature and humidity.  Since component runs could be weeks apart, the temperature and humidity will be different and as such you might see a slight variation.  Also, for PVC products, the color depth and texture is not only affected by temperature and humidity, but also by the speed and pressure with which the material is run through the extrusion process.

Even with these issues, it is very difficult to see a discernible difference between different runs.  The industry responds to complaints of whether the color and texture is within acceptable parameters, by holding the materials two feet apart, and then determining whether one is able to see a discernible difference.  Of course, this test must be done with similar light and shadow on each piece.

The bottom line - as long as you order all the plantation shutters for a single room at the same time, these variances should never be an issue.

With any luck, you are now ready to dive in, fully informed, to beautify your home with classic and elegant shutters.  And, we would be honored to help you with your plantation shutter project - you can start by getting a quick online estimate by using our online shutter cost calculator.
