Occasionally, we find situations where an interior designer would like to use the "double hung" shutter as a functional statement of old world charm.  However, there are some realities to consider as relates to double hung shutters.  These include:
  • Double hung shutters offer the maximum in shutter adjustability, but without the proper design double
  • hung shutters will sag and perform improperly.
  • Double hung bi-fold shutters must be designed so that the panel height is greater than the panel width due to leverage factor.
  • Shutters ordered with a width dimension more than the height will sag.
  • Always order double hung shutter with a four sided frame.
  • Three sided frames will not have a frame on the bottom to attach magnets and will need a light block so that there is a mounting place for the magnet.
  • There is a surcharge for double hung shutters.

With any luck the image below will help you visualize how double hung shutter look and function.

We see it in many many homes.  Beautiful arch windows which are an architectural statement of traditional beauty.  However, covering these windows with an effective and functional window covering can be problematic. So, what is the best solution?

In our humble opinion, a plantation shutter with a fully louvered custom manufactured arch is the best option. While there are many other options for covering these types of windows, none provide the clean seamless control of a fully louvered arch shutter.

The diagram below shows the basic dimensions of how to visualize the look in your window.  We know of no other option that is durable and affordable while allowing for adjustable light control.  It really is the "Cadillac" window covering application for your arch shaped window.

Figuring Louver Depth Clearance for Your Plantation Shutters

Briefly, please kindly allow us to help you think about the clearance requirements for your shutter's louvers to operate free and clear.  The louver clearance consideration is one of the primary items that drives shutter frame and louver size design decisions.  For the purposes of this blog article we are assuming the industry standard 2.5", 3.5" or 4.5" louvers are in play.

The depth of your sill and your desired frame choice will drive the process.  Do you want a "Z" frame or do you need an outside mount frame to accommodate the opening?  Additionally, will a build-out strip be required behind the frame to provide the needed clearance.

The best way to help you visualize this is with a diagram.  As such, the diagram below shows three possible configurations and the clearance required depending on the louver size chosen.  Please note, the type of tilt rod chosen also affects this consideration, as on many shutters the hidden tilt rod will require an additional 1/2" of clearance.

T-Posts are used in plantation shutters to for extra support on very large windows, or to match specific mullion locations, or to meet a certain design parameter.  T-posts are just a small up-charge and so are readily available to all consumers based on need and desire.

T-Posts divide a window vertically into sections.  T-posts can be used with any frame style. And remember, always measure from the left side of the window to the center of the T-Post for each location.

The diagram below will help you visualize how these systems work and how to measure your window for T-post locations.
