Repairing Floppy Louvers on a Plantation Shutter

With so many homeowners turning to plantation shutters as their choice for style and function, there are a few simple maintenance items to know about to keep them working well.  One such item is learning how to deal a section of louvers that won't stay in place - i.e. they flop down after you put them in place.  In essence the louvers have lost the tension which holds them where you set them.

Hopefully, you purchased a quality shutter product.  If you did, then you can fix this problem in about 2 minutes.  Here is how: (images below)
  • Open the shutter panel and examine the edges of the panel for a series of small round holes.
  • These holes should be evenly spaced and on both side of the panel - (i.e. room side and window side)
  • Take a Phillips Head screwdriver and insert it in the hole and feel for a connection with the tension screw.
  • BE GENTLE - and turn the screw clockwise while holding the louvers steady with your other hand.
  • You should feel the tension screw firm up a bit, but do not over tighten.
  • Repeat this process with the screws on the other side of the panel.
  • Test the louvers, they should be firm but not over tight when moving.
  • That's it - You just adjusted the tension on your plantation shutter's louvers.

A quick search of plantation shutters on HGTV or Houzz will produce a plethora of gorgeous images which contain plantation shutters in all imaginable design styles. Custom plantation shutters can be made with many different louver sizes, colors, textures and features.  As such, they can be designed to match your decor.

Plantation shutters can be made to work in modern decor, traditional decor, transitional decor, rustic decor, urban decor, etc. and their timeless nature likely makes them the last window covering you will ever buy.

For instance, to fit in with a traditionally decorated home, you might choose a standard tilt rod, bi-fold panels, combined with a classic "z" frame style featuring decorative details. In a transitional styled home you might choose shutters with an off-center divider rail in an ivory finish to coordinate with a variety of other home furnishings. In a contemporary home, choose shutters featuring a simple, clean lined frame, hidden tilt rod, and stainless steel hinges.

Shutter Install in Arizona Room Windows

The slideshow above shows a row of plantation shutters we recently provided for a retiree located in Mesa Arizona.  This customer wanted to match the type of shutters she had facing the street with similiar shutters in her Arizona room.  The shutters in the front of the house were nearly 15 years old.

Additionally, these sun room windows were built with a decorate sill on the bottom.  Fortunately, we were able to find a near perfect color match, and the louvers matched at 3.5".  We then provided a three sided frame, which butted against the bottom sill and installed a custom cut light gap at the bottom for stability, light control and magnet mounting.

The result was a sun room transformation which eliminated worn out and yellowed PVC vertical blinds for beautiful plantation shutters.

Over many years of providing plantation shutters, we have discovered 10 reasons folks love plantation shutters. These include:
  1. Aesthetics. Shutters are attractive. They come in practically unlimited sizes and finishes as well as mounting options.  They fit in with almost any décor and offer a clean, cohesive look throughout the home. They are available in any color, stain or texture.
  2. Privacy. Interior shutters can be tilted to let the light flow in, yet prevent viewing from outdoors. This allows you to have privacy as well as light.
  3. Ventilation. Want to let the fresh air inside yet not have a breeze trash your blinds? Not only can you tilt the plantation shutter's louvers for maximum privacy and light control you can also open up the panels and let the breezes in.  They are also strong enough to keep the panels closed yet tilt open and let the breezes flow.
  4. Durability. Plantation shutters are durable and built to last. In addition, most shutters come with a linited lifetime warranty. Because you won’t need to replace your shutters, your initial investment will pay off over time.
  5. Easy to clean. Plantation shutters are virtually maintenance-free. Use a damp cloth from time to time and wipe off the dust. In addition, you don’t need to take them down in order to clean them as you might with other types of window coverings.
  6. Energy savings. Shutters are excellent insulators as well as perfect for deflecting sunlight. Your energy bills will be lower when you have shutters installed.
  7. Child safety. Plantation shutters do not have dangling cords or strings that children can get tangled up in, making them a safer alternative to mini-blinds and drapes.
  8. Plantation shutters can help preserve the life of furniture and carpets. You can leave the shutters in the up or semi-closed position to direct the sunlight away from furniture and carpets. The UV rays of the sun cause materials to fade over time.
  9. Capital home improvement. Did you know that installing shutters is considered a capital improvement on your home? This can translate into added value when you sell your home.
  10. Plantation shutters can be used as room dividers or cabinetry. In addition to covering windows, shutters can also be installed over cutouts and niches in your home. For example, if your family room has a built-in TV niche that’s no longer needed because of today’s widescreen TV choices, consider using shutters as cabinet doors for an attractive new storage solution.
