Shutters on Corner Windows

If you have windows that meet in a corner and would like shutters as your decor of choice, then we have a couple options to help you.  First, we can use a large Z-Frame on both shutters and butt then together in the corner with a fill strip behind to support the back side of the frame.  This is probably the most popular option but the downside is the loss of some openness as the frame will take an additional 2" strip of your opening.  However, depending on the window location and view this is often no big deal.  See diagram below.

The second option is to pay a little extra and have the frame miter cut to butt in the corner.  This requires a bit more time and effort at install, especially if the window frame is out of square.  See diagram below.

The bottom line - please know that if you have a corner window and you love shutters, there is a solution for you.

We would love to help you with your shutter project.  Also, check out our online shutter cost calculator for a rough idea of what new shutters might cost.

Would you like to have shutters on your french doors which have a handle protrusion?  Really, it's no problem.

French doors occasionally come with a lever type of handle which protrudes into the glass section of the door. In these situations, the French door will need a cut out.  We, like most shutter manufacturers, offer a half circle and rectangular cut out. Typically a standard 4 1/4” half circle cut out is enough to accommodate most levers, though we also offer a 5 1/4” and 6 1/4”.  Study the diagrams below to find your particular application.

The cut out plate is 1/2” thick.  Custom cut outs are available (such as an oval) with a surcharge.

As you consider your plantation shutter project, it is helpful to be able to visualize what panels might look like - per specification parameters.  If you can see this in your minds eye, you are well on your way to knowing if plantation shutters are right for you.

So with that said, standard rectangular shutters can consist of one or more panels hinged in a variety of configurations. Single panels can be individually hinged, or two panels may be hinged together in a bi-fold design. All bi-fold panels are butted together and have a butterflied butt hinge attached on the back of the stiles. Maximum width for 2ea panels bi-fold poly shutters, 2L or 2R is 42” and 48” for basswood shutters.

Remember, when thinking about your panel height we recommend that panels over 96” in height have a divider rail, so that louvers will not need to be hand pressed to close.  Additionally, panels over 96” in height require a divider rail to ensure structural integrity.

One last thing , bi-fold panels (2L 2R) without a track system can only span 96” for basswood shutters and 84” for poly shutters.
